CHAPTER NINE

“Maybe I should tell Harrison to leave,” Daisy said to Sara the next morning.

They were sitting in Daisy’s kitchen, having coffee, and it was just past seven thirty. Harrison was picking up Daisy at eight for the trip to Prairie City. Axel had already had his coffee and was helping Noah reconfigure the petting zoo stalls now that they had two llamas and two alpacas. Good thing he wasn’t around to listen to her and Sara’s conversation, because he’d be really worried about how close Daisy was letting herself get to Harrison.

“To pack his stuff and go home and we’ll see him in court,” Daisy added. She wrapped her hands around her mug. Most of her wanted to go with Harrison today. But a piece of her knew she was asking for trouble. What if she let herself really acknowledge how she felt about Harrison? What if she started seeing his point of view about the ranch ownership? What if she found herself trying to talk her brothers into accepting that Dawson Family Guest Ranch truly belonged to the McCords?

She’d tossed and turned last night, grateful to get up with a hungry Tony at 2:30 a.m. She’d sat with him in the glider for a long time after he’d fallen back asleep, wondering how today would go. Wondering what was going to happen in the end. She and her brothers would never, ever give up the ranch—not without one hell of a fight. No matter how Daisy felt about Harrison, the ranch was the Dawsons’ property. It was the Dawsons. She’d felt better after that, more secure about not warming to Harrison’s way of seeing things.

Sara sipped her coffee, the same chocolate-pecan decaf brew Daisy was having. “Yeah, this plan of yours seems to have backfired.” Sara shot Daisy a smile. “But at least you’re in love.”

Daisy’s mouth dropped open. She wouldn’t go that far. Right? “I am not! I just kind of can’t stop thinking about him. And his face. Every time I want to hate him, I keep seeing him handing Tony to me, bundled in his blue dress shirt, on the service road. I see the glistening in his eyes, the wonder of what he’d just helped do. I keep seeing that Harrison. Why does he have to be so easy to talk to? Everything I say, he gets. And every time he gets me, I think about Jacob, who I almost actually married. He never understood anything I said. He’d look at me funny, and I just knew he couldn’t make heads or tails out of what I meant about so many things.”

Oh God. She really was in love. And she’d just detailed why.

“Uh-oh,” Sara said, nodding. “This is dangerous territory.”

“I know. Here I was, trying to hit Harrison with the warm fuzzies about me and the family and the ranch. Who got smothered by the warm fuzzies instead? Me. Did I not just get dumped on my wedding day? Is the man who wants to take away our family business the very man I’m head over heels for? What.
